Experience Diyabubula, Sri Lanka’s New Unique Art & Jungle Hideaway

Barberyn Ayurveda Resorts, Sri Lankas leading Ayurveda destination, has announced the opening of its brand new unique location – the Art & Jungle Hideaway Diyabubula. This boutique place was created in an effort to preserve Sri Lankan wild nature and a piece of history associated with one of the few greatest living artists from Sri Lanka, Laki Senanayake.

The boutique bolthole, consisting of five individually designed villas, is surrounded by the jungle and is located near the town of Dambulla in central Sri Lanka.

The lodge was created by a renowned Sri Lankan artist Laki Senanayake who chose 100-year old railway sleepers as basic building material. The wood, seasoned by sun and rain over a century, has been combined with sleek and beautiful timber sourced from all over Sri Lanka and hand-crafted at Diyabubula. The place seamlessly captures the beauty of the Sri Lankan wilderness combined with the artistic talents of one of Sri Lanka’s greatest living artists.

Laki continues to live and work at Diyabubula, hence offering the guests a unique opportunity to see one a talented artist in his natural environment and enjoy his work. Laki believes that we are all artists by nature and is happy to encourage guests to draw and paint, inviting guests to visit his wall-less minimalist living space.

The artist himself describes Diyabubula as a water garden – which in fact it is, surrounded by art, inside the residences and around the premises. At the core of Diyabubula is the sprouting water bubble with the meandering path. It leads to Laki’s little gallery containing his most recent paintings. The water garden is frequently visited by a great variety of birds, thus making it a great spot for bird enthusiasts.

Located in the middle of the cultural centre of Sri Lanka, Diyabubula is an ideal place from which to explore the art and architecture of the country’s world heritage sites including: the cave temple of Dambulla, the massive rock fortress of Sigiriya and the ancient city of Polonnaruwa.  Experience nature, wildlife and mountains of Sri Lanka by visiting nearby natural sites such as Rose Quartz Mountain; Minneriya National Park; and Ritigala Forest Reserve.
The opening of Diyabubula coincides with the timing of one of the world’s most spectacular life events, the elephant gathering at Minneriya National Park close to Diyabubula. To celebrate the occasion, Diyabubula is offering a special package offering both experiences. Choose from a 3 or 6-night full board stay at Diyabubula combined with a half-day excursion to The Minneriya Elephant gathering including all transport.

The Minneriya Elephant Gathering is the largest concentration of wild elephants in Asia, ranked 6th amongst the world’s largest wildlife gatherings (Lonely Planet). Every year, during the dry season (July to October), the Minnerya National Park plays host to this amazing natural phenomenon where up to 200 wild elephants come together on the receding shores of the reservoir.
